This presentation will introduce interpreters to Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). HLHs incident is approximately 1 in 10,000 live births in the US. Interpreters will explore normal heart blood flow, and how the heart flow changes due to HLHS. Furthermore, we will look at the end result of the heart flow after the three stage palliative surgical treatment that most HLHS patients undergo. We will also explore and decipher the most commonly use medical acronyms for HLHS.

Presenter Bio
Nancy Ramirez is Diversity Services Lead at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. She has worked at CHLA for 16 years in different departments throughout CHLA. Eight years ago, she found her home at Diversity Services. And shortly after, she was assigned as the Spanish interpreter for the Heart Institute where she worked for seven years. She is Native Guatemalan and came to the US as a teenager. She is a CHI™ Spanish- Certified Healthcare Interpreter™ and a board member for CHIA. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies at Humboldt University. Furthermore she is one of the contributors for Mastering Patient & Family Education, A Healthcare Handbook for Success by Lori C. Marshall.
