Description
This 6-hour workshop is a special opportunity for interpreters to learn to work in the fast-changing field of pediatric genetics, using a new curriculum designed by Cynthia Roat in collaboration with the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics. This workshop introduces basic concepts in genetics, introduces the providers on the genetic services team, walks through what to expect in a pediatric genetic consult, and discusses genetic testing. Technical vocabulary is introduced and exercises help the interpreter learn the vocabulary both in English and a non-English language. Finally, interpreting exercises based on real-life pediatric encounters create opportunities for practice. Language-specific glossaries and practice exercises are provided in Spanish, Cantonese, Vietnamese and Arabic.
