Certification

The California Healthcare Interpreting Association encourages the professionalization of the interpreting industry through education, training and certification.

The following two certifications aim to demonstrate medical interpreting competency:

The Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) http://cchicertification.org)

The National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI)   https://www.certifiedmedicalinterpreters.org

We encourage interpreters to carefully look at both certification bodies to make informed decisions on a certification pathway.

Continuing Education (CE) certificates for Certified Interpreters

CHIA issues proof of continuing education at the time it is earned. CHIA does not warranty the replacement of lost certificates.

We strongly suggest that you use your profile with your certifying organization as a place to safely archive your certificates.

If you hold CHI or CoreCHI/CoreCHI-Performance credential, you may upload it to:

http://cchicertification.org/renew-certification/renewal-process/

If you hold NBCMI credential, you may upload it to:

https://www.certifiedmedicalinterpreters.org/get-recertified

Credentialing bodies allow you to upload your CE certificates as you earn them. If you find you meet your CEU hours early, prior to your certification expiration date, you may be able to renew up to 6 months before expiration. Please refer to your credentialing bodies' requirements to learn more.
