Membership Benefits

CHIA would like to invite you to become part of the organization for only $50 per year! CHIA members contribute to the organization's success at different levels. It is not necessary to live or work in California to become a member. Click here to join now!

CHIA members include interpreters, translators, interpreter teachers and trainers, health care advocates, administrators, nurses, doctors, lawyers, refugee health care activists, and public policy experts. They work for interpreter training programs, hospitals, community clinics, social service organizations, language service providers, government agencies, and community colleges.

CHIA members have the following benefits:

CHIA is committed to be there for you! We need you to support CHIA's mission to overcome linguistic and cultural barriers to high-quality health care, for the development of the healthcare interpreter profession, advocating for culturally and linguistically appropriate healthcare services, and promoting education and training for healthcare interpreters. 

Student Membership Policy

Purpose

To support and encourage the next generation of professional interpreters, CHIA offers a Student Membership category that provides access to resources, events, and a community of practice while accommodating the financial constraints of students preparing to enter the field.

Eligibility

Student Membership is available to individuals who meet all of the following criteria:

• Are currently enrolled in an interpreter training program, language access-related coursework, or a healthcare or linguistics-related program at an institution full time or part-time.
• Are not currently employed as a professional interpreter.
• Must provide proof of enrollment: enrollment letter by your program head or email by your program head to president@chiaonline.org including your full name, email address and course.

• Discounted registration for CHIA’s Annual Conference and professional development events
• Access to member-exclusive webinars and online resources
• Networking opportunities with working professionals and mentors in the field
• Digital CHIA news and updates
• Eligibility to volunteer for our conference/events/projects

Note: Student Members are not eligible to vote in CHIA elections or run for board positions.

Membership Fee

Student Membership is offered for free, reviewed annually by the CHIA Board. 

Term & Renewal

• One-time only membership is valid for one calendar year from the date of registration.
• Students may not renew their student membership annually.
• CHIA reserves the right to re-request proof of enrollment.
• Any specific terms or conditions of registrations for events or activities will apply to student memberships, including but not limited to cancelation fees or no refunds.

Transition to Individual Membership

After one year or upon graduation or transition into employment professional interpreting work, Student Members are encouraged to upgrade to a Individual Membership to continue enjoying full member benefits and participation rights.
