Description:

Since the Covid-19 pandemic started in the year 2020, Nations around the globe and Healthcare systems specifically in the USA, had experienced “tumultuous times” to say the very least, changing paradigms in the world and making history. Particularly, during the first half of 2020, the USA found itself drawn into two crises not just for the pandemic and its implications on minorities health, but also for the “matters of life and breath". Interpreters as the front-line healthcare workers, are immediately involved in happenings and stories, assisting LEP patients and families. And we realized, once again, that for always we had been witnesses of all types of events, among them, acts of racism and disparities in multiple instances, where we struggle internally between being just a “conduit” and our moral obligation to act as “advocate”. In this presentation we are going to review the results of a NBCMI survey regarding the most controversial role of the Interpreter: The Advocacy role. We will review the Medical Interpreter’s ethical framework, and introduce a dialogue towards a “contemporary approach” to the advocacy dilemma to support Health Equity.

Presenter Bios

Gustavo Negrete is the current Chair of the NBCMI and had previously served as the Sectary of the National Board. He is President and CEO of a micro interpreting and translation company and is the new managing director of TransInterpreting. He is a Certified HIPAA Privacy Expert and has over twenty years of experience in health care having served in several clinical roles and departments prior to becoming an interpreter. He is a staunch advocate for language access, LEP rights and the interpreting profession as an active participant in organizations who lobby and or promote these causes.

Luz Doynel-Thompson is chair of the Conference Committee of the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters. She currently works in the ER of the Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, California. Luz is an experienced interpreter specializing in medical, conferences, community, legal, and immigration interpreting. She also specializes in English<>Spanish translations. She is a Certified Medical Interpreter in Spanish by NBCMI and CCHI, and (CMI-HUB) in Portuguese by NBCMI. Luz holds an MBA in Foreign Trade from IE/EXEC/UFRJ in Brazil and has completed all the training offered by the prestigious Southern California School of Interpretation.
