A baby born too early or with birth defects creates an emotionally challenging time for parents, who must go home and leave their baby in the care of professionals in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Interpreters can better serve such parents and the healthcare team by understanding the roles of NICU providers; the infant accommodations and technology they will see; communication “do’s and don’ts;” logistics of entering and working in the NICU setting; and specialized terminology. These topics will be covered during the presentation, as well as a conversation with participants about particular opportunities for culture brokering. We will also discuss resources for encounter debriefing and providing interpreters with emotional support.
