About the program

After a brief presentation about patients' rights to language access services, the importance of trained and qualified interpreters, and how the publication, CALIFORNIA STANDARDS FOR HEALTHCARE INTERPRETERS: Ethical Principles, Protocols, and Guidance on Roles & Intervention, is structured to guide interpreters through the complex task of healthcare interpreting, participants will consult their own free copies of the booklet as they discuss common dilemmas in small groups.  Bring your own anecdotes about challenging situations.  This session can be helpful to individuals preparing for certification and for experienced interpreters seeking a review of fundamentals. A CHIA Standards booklet will be available for all attendees.

Who should attend this session?

Individuals who are new to the field, ASL interpreters new to healthcare interpreting, certified interpreters seeking a review of fundamentals, individuals responsible for ensuring that their interpreters have training in ethics and roles, professional interpreters preparing for national certification, and attendees who want to attend a session in which they will have ample opportunity to talk with other interpreters about ethical dilemmas.
