The disastrous 2017 North Bay Fires leveled entire neighborhoods, destroyed thousands of homes and businesses, forced the evacuation and displacement of thousands of residents and burned over 140, 000 acres. This event presented enormous challenges for disseminating timely and accurate information to Sonoma and Napa county’s large, predominantly Hispanic, non-English speaking population. This workshop will share some of the challenges faced when trying to provide these services during a sudden crisis. It will also discuss lessons learned and best practices to prepare for a community’s linguistic needs before a disaster strikes, as well as the importance of integrating language access into disaster response efforts. This topic is of vital importance in our current environmental state of extreme climate events including wildfires, flooding and earthquakes.
